In recent years, the Berlin-Brandenburg region has developed into an internationally respected biotechnology site with an above average rate of economic growth and a
large demand for highly qualified and motivated workers. In order to meet the mid and long term demand for qualified staff and thus support the economic growth of businesses,
a training and further education centre for biotechnology and chemistry was set up on the campus of Luckenwalde Biotechnology Park in 2002.
In August 2008 the company ZAL GmbH took over the training of chemistry and biology laboratory workers at the Vocational Training Centre off Biotechnology and Chemistry (Bildungszentrum für Biotechnologie und Chemie - BBC). In cooperation with the Potsdam branch of the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK Potsdam), ZAL provides industry related education and further training for companies in the life sciences field, day release training for apprentices, as well as diverse retraining and further training courses for staff and job applicants. The courses on offer are aimed at apprentices and staff from biotechnology, chemical and pharmaceutical companies.
Another focus of the BBC is its partnership with schools, in order to inform pupils and interest them in job prospects in scientifically oriented occupations. Training courses in biology and chemistry are provided for teaching staff. In addition, laboratory ‘taster courses’ in biotechnology and chemistry are also provided for interested laypeople.
